    Our background

The history of collective kitchens in Quebec dates back to 1982, to the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district of Montréal. They were born out of the ingenuity and resourcefulness of two sisters and a friend who regularly got together to plan and prepare recipes, and share the cost.

Their idea spread through the neighbourhood, and then throughout Quebec. In 1990, collective kitchens came together as a unit, called the Regroupement des cuisines collectives du Québec (Quebec Collective Kitchens Association).

Now, at the dawn of the new millennium, there are over 1 330 collective kitchens in Quebec preparing good meals, taking charge, stewing up lots of good ideas and harvesting the fruits of a better life.
